1870 Tilbury Fort was upgraded, new riffled muzzle loading guns were implemented. Later in 1978 the Nordenfelt machine gun was introduced to the fort. 1870 1880_1890 In 1880 The post and telegraph office opened at No.1 Dock Road, this was one of the first substantially buildings within what’s now called Tilbury Town. As well as this in 1886 the Docks were officially opened by the East and West Indian Dock Company. 1880-90 1920 1920 The dock continues to grow with goods being manually transferred off boats toward the train line. All goods at the time had to be load- ed and unloaded by hand. In 1920 Tilbury Fire Brigade opened and there was a celebration for the unavailing of the new fire engine 1940 Tilbury was used as a staging post to ‘Launch’ raids on London should Germany invade. Thurrock county was on the front-line during the Battle of Britain. And two sisters sadly died in a make shift air shelter. The graves end ferry is introduced and there is a increase in the current docks. This is to make way for container ships and passenger traffic. 1980 1980 Houses particularly in the North of Tilbury are demolished to make way for improved Council housing stock. There are cultural changes starting to happen the Skinhead generation has begun.
