“Ever sat on the hot, sweaty London Tube and felt inclined to strip off? Chances are you're not alone and even better – there's a sauna specifically designated place this year.“
BRIEF:
After a very successful collaboration with the Finnish Institute and Sami Rintala back in 2019 building the Helsinki Tea House, the Fabrication Lab is collaborating with them once again to build a portable sauna in London!
A group of students from the University of Westminster will be working with Sami Rintala and Remi Groenendijk to design and build a portable sauna that will live in London’s Victoria Embankment Gardens for two weeks in July 2022. Afterwards, the sauna will tour the country in order to allow more people to enjoy it!
The sauna will be pre-fabricated in the Fabrication Lab, where students will be helped by the Lab’s staff to fabricate the pieces that will then be used to build the sauna. They will be using Scandinavian redwood that will be processed using a 5 axis robot and a 3 axis CNC router.
The sauna will officially open to the public on the 28th June 2022 in Victoria Embankment Gardens, in front of the Savoy Hotel.

TOOLS:
The team will be using both traditional and digital fabrication machines to build the sauna. They will be making use of all the resources we have in Lab, with special focus on CNC and wood work.
MATERIALS:
The chosen material for this project is Scandinavian unsorted planed square edge redwood.
