Architectural Media Workshop '20

The Architectural Media Workshop was an evolution and significant expansion of the long-running Digital Fabrication Workshop. Participants included all first year and this time also second year Architecture students from the School of Architecture + Cities, amounting to more than 350 students. The project was a collaboration between the Fabrication Lab and internationally acclaimed design office Skidmore, Owings and Merrill.

Students worked together in teams to explore ten of SOMs most celebrated projects through creating, using analogue and digital tools and model-making. SOM provided access to original drawings and files, as well as support and tutorials from senior members of the offices, and in some cases the original project architects and engineers.

The project produced innovative case studies of these important architectural precedents as well as investigating a new way of combining architectural education with knowledge exchange with professional practice, and the general public. The project culminated in two public exhibitions, one in the Fabrication Lab and another in Ambika P3, as the students’ work joined the critically acclaimed SOM touring exhibition Form and Structure.
