Welcome to the Masked Ball! The workshop runs for a week right at the beginning of the year and ends with a formal, White Tie event: The Masked Ball.

MArch students joining the course will work together in the Fabrication Lab to create a series of events using physical staging, sound and light, based on the choreography and culture of dances from around the world. The site-specific creations, installed in Ambika P3 and occupied during the Masked Ball, will form a unique, transient architecture, as well as creating a dramatic start to the course.

Special guests from the University will be joining to enjoy the event and to judge a competition for the best installations and contributions to the Ball.

THEORY:

SITE:

The Internet and AMBIKA P3 in University of Westminster, 35 Marylebone Road.

BRIEF:

The Workshop will involve a lecture and series of tutorials, clinics and show ‘n tells, as well as practical demonstrations and fabrication projects. We will introduce you to principles of prototyping and design through making, as well as developing your knowledge and skills in both traditional and digital manufacturing processes. You will learn how to work productively and creatively with a range of materials and have the opportunity to generate, test and realise your designs as a habitable installation. You will be guided along the way by the team of architecture lecturers, technicians and research staff that comprise the Fabrication Lab, and will have exclusive use for a week of all the resources it has to offer. The brief for the Workshop is simple but challenging. You will have the week to use what you learn to design, test and fabricate a collection of spatial installations, physical artefacts and sensory devices to transform Ambika P3 into a unique Masked Ball. We will then use what you create to host an event for us all to enjoy the space and celebrate your work, to which we will invite our key partners from architectural practice as well as senior members of the School of Architecture and the University. Please come prepared for an energetic start to your programme!
