Metal Essentials will teach you the fundamentals of using the Metalshop. It is divided into two parts, an online part and a practical.
The course starts below by taking you through some basic steps you need to learn to start using the metals lab. It will also introduce you to metals, their properties, and their Hazards and Controls, and how to use them. Once you have read and watched all the information you will need to complete a short quiz then you will be ready to book your practical.
5 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE METALSHOPS:
1. ALWAYS CLAMP YOUR WORK
2. ALWAYS WEAR GLOVES
3. DEBURR THE STOCK AS SOON AS YOU CUT IT.
4. ALWAYS USE LUBRICANT WHEN DRILLING.
5. ONLY USE METALS AND PLASTICS
5 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT METAL:
1. METAL COMES FROM THE EARTH'S CRUST
There are different ways to cut a tree. Before using the metal must be extracted from the ore by a process called smelting. It is extracted by mining and it is a non-organic material.
2. THERE AREÂ 2 TYPES OF METAL.
Ferrous metals (have iron) - High tensile strength and durability Vulnerable to rust Magnetic Engineering steel, carbon steel, cast iron and wrought iron.
Non-ferrous metals (don't have iron) - Highly malleable. High resistance to rust Non magnetic Aluminium, copper, lead, zinc and tin, gold and silver.
In order to make stronger and more durable metals we create alloys. These are most metals we see and use. Alloys are composed by two or more different metals Can be ferrous or non-ferrous.
3. PROPERTIES
It is harder and stronger than wood. It is very durable and versatile. It conducts electricity and heat. And, it takes longer to work with.
4. IT IS AN ENGINEERED MATERIAL
Before using it it needs to be processed. Metal presents itslef in many different forms.
5. METALS CAN BE HAZARDOUS
Their edges are very sharp so you should always wear gloves when working with metal.
It can be very heavy. When drilling, you will need to use lubricant to avoid heating and sparks.
They create metal swarf, not wood chips or dust - Never handle swarf! Use a brush or vacuum
Cutting leaves burrs, not splinters - Always deburr edges, whether an edge or hole.
NEXT STEPS
Once you've gone through the online part of the essentials you can go ahead and do the quiz below. Afterwards, you will be able to book your metal essentials.
