INTRODUCTION:

The Great Pi Challenge is a series of projects celebrating Pi through making, culminating in a public Exhibition and Competition on Pi Day, March 14, 2024.

Your brief is to design and build a fully functional kinetic device to celebrate, explore, and create something based on the mathematical constant Pi (a PiBot). You will need to design your device, like all good architecture, to support a specific function and with an appropriate and aesthetically appealing form; it must have a structure and an appropriate materiality; it must perform according to your intended criteria. You will need to use all your skills and techniques available to you as a design including drawing and sketching, and particularly an ability to design through making employing digital modeling and fabrication (using lasers and 3D printing) as well as supplementing the construction of your PiBot with traditional craft skills in wood, metal, and/or casting.
