Transforming the previous materials testing facility into a new interactive resource for both materials and building systems integrated into the Fabrication Lab, the MBSRC project has constructed and collected hundreds of material samples from the industrial to the experimental. Creating a new library of manufactured and natural materials - from sample tiles to structural assemblies for reference and research - the project worked to develop the materials lab space and collate an online catalogue for widening accessibility. The new adaptable lab is now able to host classes on materials testing and structural analysis, presentations or lectures to larger groups and exhibit featured materials through a large display wall showcasing notable and unusual entries to the materials library.

The centre was supported by the Quintin Hogg Trust who enabled the primary development of this new area of the Fab Lab. Since its inception the MBSRC has assisted MArch and BA Architecture, BSc Architecture and Environmental Design and BSc Architectural Technology students as well as a number of courses in Construction Management. In partnership with Material Driven we were able to expand our knowledge network and diversify our materials reference collection with expertise from Purva Chawla and Adele Orcajada.
