PARAMETRIC FESTIVE WINDOW

Our Festive Windows are a celebration of the festive season and an excuse to spread some good cheer, but also both research vehicle to develop the capabilities of the Lab and the expertise of the team, and an opportunity to engage with our local communities. For the Parametric Tree project of 2018, we continued our investigation into the opportunities of cheap, recyclable materials and our industry partnership with DS Smith, Europe’s biggest card manufacturer. We used parametric software to create an efficient, structurally sound design for an abstract, recyclable Christmas Tree. We then developed a process simple craft-making skills with hot-wire cutters and plaster, and invited colleagues from the University House Staff to help design and create decorations for the tree. The project created the opportunity for those who had worked around the Lab for a long time to engage with us for the first time, and to find out for themselves how we work, and what we offer. The trees were installed and covered with the decorations made by the house team, and then exhibited in the highly visible locations of our Marylebone, New Cavendish Street, and Regent’s Street campuses.
