TWELVE DAYS FESTIVE WINDOW

The Twelve Days Festive Window was the next iteration of the project beginning with the Parametric Christmas Tree. It too aimed at spreading good cheer for the festive season, while developing the capabilities of the Lab and the expertise of the team, and engaging with our local communities. The project on this occasion was based in the Lab itself, in our Robotic Theatre, strategically located at the front of the Lab and visible from Marylebone Road. Our partner on this occasion was Korean company Foresco, manufacturer of Forescolor, a through-color engineered timber board. We continued our material experimentation, exploring its machining properties and using it to develop a set of stepper-motor powered mechanisms about to animate kinetic installations. We then invited our students, University staff, the general public, and two local schools to participate in a design and making competition, with the brief of drawing ideas base on one of the gifts from the Twelve Days of Christmas. We manufactured the 12 best entries using the machines in the Lab, and assembled them on the kinetic mechanisms in the Robot cell. The industrial robot arm was then used as a continuation of our research into the use of robotic cinematography to investigate scale models, and published the 12 resulting films online on our website. The project was therefore made available to both the local community, commuters and passers-by on the street in Marylebone Road, and to the world at large on our website. Participants included some students from Westminster, as well as our reception staff, children from St Mary’s and Bryanston Square School and Westminster Academy, as well as people of all ages from the general public (from 5 years to over 70!).
