XR Lab

The XR Lab is a new teaching and research space across the Schools of Computer Science and Architecture + Cities exploring virtual, augmented and mixed reality technologies and their applications. In the Fabrication Lab, the XR Lab space hosts the latest VR/XR headsets and powerful workstations including HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and HoloLens, as well as equipment for prototyping and testing AR mobile apps. The aim of the XR Lab project is to promote and integrate the use of emerging extended reality media in existing teaching and research programmes, including the MArch Digital Design courses, and offer new tools for creative exploration and learning. A number of projects have been completed between the XR Lab and other research staff within the university already and the space has afforded the Fabrication Lab the opportunity to develop XR projects oriented towards architecture and the built environment.

The creation of the space was possible through the generous support of the Quintin Hogg Trust, and in addition to game-environment based extended reality tools the XR Lab also holds an array of 3D scanning equipment suitable for high-fidelity but small desktop objects to very large point-cloud environments. These include a state-of-the-art Faro LiDAR scanner that is used in industry and research to survey existing structures and environments to within a sub-millimeter accuracy.
